SA surf outlook Feb 10

So far the last month of Summer has been better on the South Coast than it has on the Mid Coast, despite days of SE winds. Friday and Saturday delivered a solid Southerly swell between Goolwa and Cape Jervis, and the wind even threatened to almost go offshore at one stage. Yorkes scored a couple of OK days on west-facing breaks, but the Mid Coast has seen virtually nothing since the long weekend. That’s hopefully about to change.

As I type surf is barely 1′ along the entire South Coast, and the Mid Coast is predictably flat. A new WSW swell will build overnight, and there should be a few 1;’ waves on the Mid early Tuesday. It’ll be a bit full with the big tide at 0630, and the outgoing tide will knock some puff out of it after 8am. The beachies should offer a few 1 – 2′ waves at lunch as the tide bottoms out, and the reef breaks might have a few two footers on the incoming tide after lunch. Unfortunately, fresh Southerly winds will pick up after midday to around 20 knots – trashing anywhere exposed. Middleton will be onshore and only a foot or so. West facing breaks over at Yorkes look good for the next three days.

The swell will ease into Wednesday, the Mid Coast will be back to around 1′ and clean with 10 knot SE winds early. The breeze will pick up and tend more SSE after lunch. The South Coast will be wind affected and 1 – 2′ between Middleton and Goolwa.

A new WSW swell should lift wave heights again on Thursday, with 1′ waves on the Mid Coast building to 1 – 2′ later. West facing breaks over at Yorkes should also be good.  Winds will be light from the ESE in the morning, tending S at 10  -15 knots after lunch. The South Coast will be wind affected with messy surf in the 1 – 2′ range at Middleton.

The wind will be more Southerly on Friday, 10 knots early but over 22 knots after lunch. The Mid Coast will be back to around 1′, and it’ll get pretty bumpy after lunch. The dead onshores will leave the South Coast a mess, with surf around 2′ at Middelton.

Heading into the weekend the Southerly airstream will continue. The breeze will have some east in it in the mornings, becoming a fresh southerly in the afternoon on both days. Surf will be around 1′ on the Mid Coast, 1′ and sloppy at Middleton on Saturday and maybe 2′ on Sunday… still messy.

A new WSW swell is lining up around Tuesday next week. More on that in the next forecast.
