South Coast

Swell has lifted overnight and conditions are clean on the South Coast this morning, with light offshore NNW winds. Surf around 3 – 4′ along the Middleton – Day St stretch, and 2′ around at Chiton. Waits and Parson’s will be bigger but banks are not great at the moment, Waits Point of Parson’s point are about it. The forecast predicts winds will tend NW, then West at 15 knots after lunch, which may add a bit of a bump to the swell along exposed stretches. Middleton Bay / Point should hold up pretty well all day. Shred factor 8/10

Mid Coast

Conditions are fairly clean on the Mid Coast early with light NE winds adding a slight wobble to the swell. There are 1′ waves on the reefs with occasional bigger sets, and the tide draining out until 11am. The beachies should have a few waves through low tide mid morning, and the reefs may lift a bit on the incoming tide after lunch. The forecast is weird, predicting NE-SW winds up to 15 knots. If it goes onshore SW after lunch it’ll become bumpy, but E-NE will keep it clean. The Noarlunga AWS will give you a heads up if anything changes. Shred factor 5/10.

Mid Coast

NNW winds are gusting close to 30 knots on the Mid Coast early, and it’ll be another day of cold, stormy weather. Surf is messy at around 2′ with a foot of wind swell rolling down the gulf and hitting the beach at an angle. A fairly intense cold front is headed our way and will cross the coast sometime between 10am and 2pm, bringing strong wind and plenty of rain. Behind it winds will be W-SW at 30 knots or more, so the arvo will see a building stormy. The timing of the change will determine how big it gets, but keep an eye on stormy venues like Dumpers and Adelaide’s worst kept secret spot after lunch and after the wind swings. The evening tide will be huge by the looks. Shred factor 4/10

Hurley Winter Classic, Jun 12 2016

Tough conditions greeted competitors in the 2016 Hurley Winter Classic, with a solid SSW swell running on the South Coast during Sunday on the long weekend. Contest organisers gave Parson’s Point the nod, with a bit of sand attempting to form a contestable bank in front of the judging tent.

Conditions were excellent all day with light offshore NNE winds and well defined lines thumping onto the fickle banks of Parson’s Beach. Rounds were wrapped up just after lunch, with the quarter finals selecting Teale Vanner, Max Longhurst, Khai Adams, and Richard Rickard.

The semis saw Khaiborg face off with Richard Rickard, who managed to find a few well shaped right handers breaking in toward the point. But it was Khai’s vertical backhand attack on the walling lefts that won him the heat, and a ticket to the final match up. Max Longhurst’s super critical re-entries and long floaters posed a major threat for Teale Vanner in the second semi, but a series of longer waves and an insane freight train of a right eventually sealed the deal for the KI born and bred charger.

The final showdown between Khai Adams and Teale Vanner seemed to coincide with  a pulse in the swell, and at times both competitors were pounded by set waves trying to make it back out.  They traded  a combination of steep, walling lefts and shorter, bowly rights throughout the heat and both racked up good scoring waves. But it was Teale who had everyone perched on the headland holding their collective breath as he scraped into a beast with just 2 minutes left on the heat clock. Khaiborg took a peek over the ledge and watched Teale disappear under the heaving lip, probably knowing it was a game changer… but seconds later the cold jaws clamped shut and swallowed him. Knowing he could do no more, he returned to the beach, and as the final siren sounded, Khaiborg was awarded the win.

Mid Coast

Conditions are clean and glassy on the Mid Coast early with very light East winds, and again, some small lines of swell. Surf is around shin high on the reefs with a few bigger sets, but there’s a bit of a wait them. There’s a minor high tide at 0730, but the range of movement is small today and won’t have much effect. What will have greater effect is a wind change that will probably add bumps from late morning onward. The forecast predicts SW winds up to 15 knots, shifting more to the South by late arvo. There may be some bumpy 1′ waves around sunset but it’s not gonna be special today by the looks.  Shred factor 5/10

South Coast

Winds are light and variable on the South Coast early, and conditions are glassy this morning. Swell has dropped overnight, and surf is around 2′ along the Middleton – Day St. stretch with the odd bigger set down toward Goolwa. Waits and Parson’s will be a bit bigger and hopefully holding the swell a bit better without all the closeouts today. The forecast is for SE-NE winds at 10 – 15 knots, but the breeze probably won’t get much over 10 knots all day. Swell will probably be a bit smaller after lunch, and surf may become slightly lumpy if winds go SE. Shred factor 7/10

South Coast

25 knot onshore SSW winds are making a mess of it on the South Coast this morning, and options are limited to say the leastl. Surf is around 2 – 3′ along the Middleton – Goolwa stretch, with sloppy 1 – 2′ waves around at Chiton / Gap. Waits and Parson’s will be bigger, but neither is an option with the wind like it is . Things aren’t looking any better for the rest of the day, swell will pick up a bit after lunch but quality will remain poor with 25 – 30 knot SSW winds. Shred factor 3/10
