SA surf outlook Sep 23

The Great One’s forecast came to pass, as expected, with precisely one hundred percent accuracy last week. I guess none of us should be surprised though… Father Huey could just change the surf anyway he liked, right? He could say it’ll be dead flat for 29 days and make it so. You can do that sort of thing when you’re omnipotent. Or November.

Unfortunately, this week, you are once again stuck with me and my critically limited powers of prediction and swell conjuring. You are also stuck with a big fat High pressure system over the state, and no amount of angry blowing is gonna shift it. Best you enjoy it and the fine weather it’ll bring.

The wind will be light and variable early on Tuesday, and the Mid Coast will be glassy for the first time in a few days. The incoming tide may see a few 1 – 2′ waves but it’ll be inconsistent and fade once the tide turns after 8am. The swell will be on the small side on the South Coast too, probably glassy early and around 2′ at Middleton. SE winds will add lumps after lunch. West facing breaks over at Yorkes will be fun early, just not huge.

The variable winds will roll into Wednesday, the Mid Coast will be back to an inconsistent 1′ and Middleton will hang in there at around 1 – 2′.  The breeze should go more NE  mid-morning and stay there, so it should be fairly clean along the South Coast all day.

The breeze will be more Northerly on Thursday, NE in the morning and more NW after lunch. It won’t get much over 10 knots all day, so probably the whole Fleurieu and Yorke Peninsulas will be fairly clean from sunrise to sunset. Wave heights will be back to around half a foot on the Mid Coast, and probably only a foot at Middleton. Waits or Parson’s will be the go.

The wind will swing overnight and tend Southerly early Friday, around 7 knots and onshore on the South Coast. The swell will be small early, with bumpy 1′ waves at Middleton. The Mid Coast should lift during the day, 1′ early but picking up a few 2′ sets by mid arvo. The wind should go more SE later too, so keep an eye on it.

Heading into the weekend, the wind will still be fairly light but out of the E-SE for much of it. Wave heights will pick up on the South Coast, and Middleton should be in the 3 – 4′ range on Saturday, and similar size on Sunday.  The Mid Coast should also still have a few 1 – 2′ waves leftover, but the tide running out after 5am will smash it. SE winds will add lumps on the South Coast after lunch on both days.  There should be a few 1′ waves left on the Mid Coast on Sunday, but it’ll be mostly log / SUP stuff with glassy conditions.

Monday will see a new SW swell with winds from the SE and remaining light. That could all change over the weekend, of course.
