South Coast

The biggest swell of 2017 so far is hitting the South Coast this morning, but 17 knot WSW winds are not quite ideal. From Middleton to Goolwa surf is bumpy and getting up around 6′ on the sets, with solid surf wrapping into the Bay at Middleton. It’s also a good size around the Port Elliot side with 2′ waves at The Dump, and sets over 4′ from Chiton to Knight’s. Sheltered spots will be worth a look, but the swell isn’t quite big enough to fire the highly sheltered novelty breaks. Winds will have a lot of west in them all day, so Chicken Run, Dump and Middleton Bay will hold up alright despite gusts over 20 knots. Swell is probably not far off peaking, but it’ll be fairly big all day.  Shred factor 6/10

1pm update: A squall has just blown through, turning winds more onshore and adding heaps of whitecaps. Some six foot plus bombs are hitting Bullies but it’s really gone to shit now. Dump is 3′ and bumpy now. Swell still looks to be building, so a late one at the Bay might be an option if the wind swings back to the west.
