Winds are light onshore from the SSW on the South Coast early, and conditions are sort of peaky / glassy. Surf is around 2 – 3′ along the Middleton Goolwa stretch, and 1 – 2′ around at. Chiton / Gap. Waits and Parson’s should be a bit bigger in the 3′ range and worth a look early. The onshores won’t be strong today, but they will pick up during the morning and probably blow around 15 knots during the arvo. Conditions will become sloppy as the breeze kicks in.

Mid Coast
Offshore East winds are around 17 knots on the Mid Coast early, and conditions are clean – but still pretty much flat. The gulf is just going through high tide so it’s very full, but the dropping tide will make no difference to the (no) wave situation. The beachies will only have ankle slappers through low tide at lunch, and the reefs won’t be much bigger on the incoming tide after lunch. Winds may go a bit sea-breezey for the arvo but most likely tend SE and keep it fairly clean all day.
South Coast
Winds are just a puff from the North on the South Coast early, and conditions are clean and glassy. Surf is around 2 – 3′ along the Middleton Goolwa stretch, and lining up better than it did yesterday. Chiton / Gap are a bit hit miss at around 2′, but Waits and Parson’s should be in the 3 – 4′ range and worth a look. The forecast predicts winds will go Easterly during the morning and tend more onshore SE after lunch at 10 – 15 knots. It’s most likely the arvo will be not as good as this morning as the lumps return, so get on it ASAP.
Mid Coast
There were a few rumbles of thunder on the Mid Coast overnight, but early there’s just a bit of low cloud and no wind. It’s dead glassy but there’s absolutely no swell getting into the gulf, with zero surf coming through a big morning tide. Nothing will really change as the tide drops, and even the beachies look like they’ll struggle to break through low tide at lunch. The arvo probably won’t bring any joy either, light sea breezes may add some bumps but it might just stay clean with light – moderate sou-easters from late morning oward.
South Coast
For maybe the first time in 2016 winds have swung offshore on the South Coast, tending very light NW at around 2 knots. Unfortunately days of onshore SE winds have left plenty of lumps in the swell, so it’s glassy but still pretty wobbly looking. Surf is around 3 – 4′ along the Middleton – Goolwa stretch, with glassy 2′ waves around at Chiton / Gap. It should straighten up during the day, and light variable winds will hopefully remain out of the Northern quarter after lunch. Swell also may build a bit later, so it won’t hurt to wait. Time to stop by the No Tuna Pen protest at Victor ( 10am ) and then head off for a wave.
Mid Coast
There’s no wind on the Mid Coast early and conditions are clean and glassy, also pretty much dead flat. It’s just coming off a fairly big morning tide so it’s also still very full, but the water draining out of the gulf is not gonna help it in any way. The beachies might manage some little peelers for the kids through low tide between midday and 1pm, but don’t expect a whole lot to happen on the reefs once the tide starts coming in again after lunch. Light winds should keep it clean all day, and the weather looks great at least.
SA surf outlook Jan 9 – 13 2016
Tomorrow looks like the first day of offshore conditions on the South Coast, and you better grab it while you can. A large slow moving high will maintain the hot weather ( high 30’s on Sunday ) and light ENE winds will slowly tend more NE-N over the Fleurieu and Yorke Peninsulas.
A new SW swell will also lift wave sizes during the day down South, possibly over 4ft along the Middleton – Goolwa stretch. The Mid Coast will only see small refracted swell, nothing much over shin-high all day. A SW change will roll through early Monday morning but winds will quickly ease and move back to the S-SE. In any case the South Coast will then remain onshore and sloppy at least up until the middle of the week.
If you’re thinking Yorkes, Sunday or Tuesday / Wednesday will be good with a new SW swell and SE winds favouring breaks on the West-facing side of the peninsula.
The Mid Coast may see a small lift from a refracted swell on Wednesday, winds will be good but it’s unlikely to top one foot.
The weather looks to be heating up again during the week, and winds may be swinging more North heading into next weekend. More on that later in the week.
South Coast
Onshore SE winds are pretty light on the South Coast this morning, and conditions are slightly lumpy / glassy. Underlying swell is fairly straight, with surf around 3 – 4′ along the Middleton – Goolwa stretch peaky / glassy 2′ waves around at Chiton / Gap. Waits and Parson’s will be bigger, Parson’s may offer partial shelter and some pretty solid waves. Sou-easters are forecast for the rest of the day, and after lunch those onshores will pick up to around 15 knots and re-introduce the slops. Early it’s not to bad though. Shred factor: 6
Mid Coast
Winds are out of the ESE at around 15 knots on the Mid Coast this morning, and conditions are clean. It’s also pretty much dead flat with barely shin-high waves rolling over the reefs on the outgoing tide. Low tide is at 11:30 and it’s really low, and all that water leaving the gulf won’t help anything. It will at least offer the chance for a bit of exploration of the exposed reefs for lost fins and GoPro’s. Winds will tend more SE-S after lunch and probably get back up to around 20 knots, adding bumps along exposed stretches. Surf will remain very small all day. Shred factor: 1
