SA surf outlook Dec 17

Well, Southoz weather has turned on a dime as it tends to do at this time of year, going from basically Autumn to a full-on Aussie summer. For most of this week we’ll be over 40 degrees and Friday will be a scorcher before, a cool change arrives and knocks off 20 degrees for the weekend. Surfwise, it’s predictably unpredictable… but a maybe a slight improvement over the last 7 days.

A large HIGH will dominate SA weather over the next 3 days, but the wind will be a bit all over the place until it swings Southerly late on Friday.

Early on Wednesday the breeze should kick ’round to the North, so it’ll be offshore and clean down south with a 10 knot wind. Unfortunately,  it’ll be wasted with a tiny swell only serving 1′ waves between Middleton and Goolwa. Waits will be your only hope for a shortboard wave. The swell direction will be more favourable for the Mid Coast, and it should have the same fat 1′ waves we’ve seen for the last couple of days. A cool (wind) change will swing winds to the South after lunch.

The wind will go SE overnight and should be around 7 knots early on Thursday, becoming light and variable later. The South Coast should be a bit bigger with 1 – 2′ waves at Middleton, but the sou-easters will leave it lumpy. The Mid Coast should also lift slightly in size, maybe around waist high on the sets. West facing breaks at Yorkes will be clean and have a few waves, though it won’t exactly be huge.

Friday will see a Northerly wind return in the morning, 10 knots early but picking up to 25 knots as it shifts WNW later. Bu mid arvo it should have gone onshore SSW at 15 knots.  Middleton will be clean early but only around 1′ again, and the Mid might build from 1′ to 1.5′ later. The southern end of South Port might have something for the groms late Friday, but anywhere more exposed will be bumpy.

The breeze will still have a bit of South in it early Saturday, at this stage it looks SSE at 15 knots on the Fleurieu. It’ll be messy on the South Coast and only 1 – 2′, with slightly lumpy 1′ waves on the Mid Coast. The wind will be a bit Souytjherly for west-facing breaks over at Yorkes, and the South Coast will be onshore.

A new swell will arrive on the South Coast overnight, and early Sunday could see surf in the 4′ range at Middleton. Winds are looking less than perfect, tending East at 10 – 15 knots in the morning. There is a ray of hope though, with the breeze backing off after lunch and becoming light / variable later in the day.  The Mid Coast will be clean all day, but wave heights probably won’t top 1′.

Monday morning could be OK on the South Coast with luight NE winds and 4′ waves easing throughout the day. The Mid Coast will remain in the 1′ range.

The situation into next week is a bit hard to call, but it looks like the weather will begin to warm up again from Tuesday onwards.
