SA surf outlook Dec 22

After a pretty intense week some sanity has returned to Southoz, and it looks like the xmas week will be much more tolerable than last week was.

The swell I called last week arrived but it was certainly at the upper end of expectations. As of Sunday night it’s pumping on the South Coast and the swell has not even peaked yet – Middleton is easily  6ft and there are 6′ plus bomb sets slamming in between Chiton Rocks and Knight’s beach. What a pity the wind is from the SE… otherwise it would be one of the most epic summer swells in quite a while.

Even the dear old Mid Coast scored some new swell, and there were a few 2′ sets on sunset at  The Trough and 3 Poles.  Richard’s over at Yorkes was clean and 3′ after lunch.

A couple of large HIGH pressure systems will drift from WA to VIC over the next few days, and the weather will be much milder than last week. E-SE winds will blow for most of the week, and it probably won’t go offshore on the South Coast until maybe Saturday morning.

On Monday winds will be light from the East early, tending more SE at 15 knots after lunch. Middleton will still be a bit lumpy, but early surf could still be in the 5 – 6′ range. Lesser known options to the west will be worth a squiz. The Mid Coast should still manage a few waves too, probably around 1′ with occasional bigger sets in the morning. The swell probably will fade later in the day.

Tuesday should have lingering swell on the South Coast and 3 – 4′ waves at Middleton, but light East winds will maintain some lumps, and a 15 knots sou-easter will finish it off after lunch. The Mid Coast will only be around half a foot.

Xmas day ( wednesday )  is looking like a bit of a fizzer.

The wind should be light early in the day, but it will be from the SSE, and pick up to  15 knots after lunch. The Mid Coast should be around 1′ thanks to a more SW swell direction, but Middleton will be back to around 1′ and quality will be pretty bad with moderate onshore winds.

Thursday will mark a bit of a return to form, and will be a good time to head over to Yorkes for a few days. The wind will be SE at 10 knots early, picking up to 15 knots later. The South Coast will be messy with surf around 2′ at Middleton, but the Mid Coast will be clean and may build to 1 – 2′ later. West facing breaks at Yorkes look good all day.

Friday also looks good for Yorkes and the Mid Coast, with ESE winds at 10 knots early tending SE at 15 knots later. The Mid should be around 1 – 2′, and breaks between Berry Bay and Pondalowie will be clean with surf between waist and head high.

The swell will fade a bit overnight, but it’ll be clean on the Mid Coast with light ENE winds early. Surf will be around 1′, with occasional bigger sets on the good parts of the tide. The breeze may even have a bit of North in it on the South Coast for the dawny, with surf around 2′ at Middleton and bigger around at Parson’s.

Looking ahead, Sunday looks like a continuing E-SE pattern, with possible new swell to see out the year. More on that after xmas.
