SA surf outlook Oct 21

Reasonably happy with last week’s forecast, might even give it a “B” on the report card.

The large swell arrived on the South Coast as expected on Saturday, lighting up a couple of sheltered spots late in the day with light winds. On Sunday Bullies came to life, and even got better after lunch as winds eased and the swell sorted itself out. There was still enough in it to still deliver a few bombs to the South Coast swell magnet on Monday. Even the (rarely) marvelous Mid Coast scored some swell on Sunday, and also suffered not one, but TWO comps and a cast of thousands. I swear there were 250 people who took up surfing on the Mid Coast at 11am on Sunday. Becks must have set a new sales record for vegan pies and soy lattes.

We’ll be back to a more springy weather pattern over the next few days, winds will have a bit of East in them but the good news is, it won’t be completely flat.

Tuesday will open to light SE winds tending light NE after lunch, and a near flat Mid Coast. The swell will be easing on the South Coast but still a good 4′ at Middleton early. The East in the breeze may add a bit of a lump, but it should straighten up after lunch.

The wind will be light from the East early on Wednesday, again tending NE under 10 knots after lunch. The Mid Coast will most likely be flat, but should see a few 1′ waves in the evening as the leading edge of a new WSW swell sneaks into the gulf. Middleton will be in the 2 – 3′ range, and possibly a bit straighter after lunch as winds tend more offshore.

On Thursday morning winds will be light from the NE early, but picking up from the North to around 15 knots. There should be some new swell on the Mid Coast and 1′ waves with occasional bigger sets. Unfortunately, tides are not great with a nominal high tide at 5:30am only moving 30 cm over the next 10 hours. West facing breaks at Yorkes look good on Thursday morning, and a few options North of Innes will be worth checking from late morning onward. Middleton looks a bit smaller early with 2′ waves, but building again after lunch. It also should be a bit straighter and cleaner, so keep an eye on it for a late one.

A coo change and front will roll through overnight, turning winds onshore for Friday morning.  The Mid Coast will be onshore and 2′ early, but it will build after lunch to a medium-sized stormy. Probably not enough in it for sheltered spots.  Winds will be cross-onshore on the South Coast in the 25 knot range, with surf around 3′ in the morning building to 5′ by late arvo.

The onshore airstream will persist into the weekend, with WSW winds at 25 knots in the morning on Saturday, easing to 15 knots after lunch. Sheltered spots on the South Coast will be the go, anywhere out of the WSW wind. The Mid Coast will be messy and probably 2 – 3′ in the morning.

On Sunday the wind will still be SW, but probably back under 10 knots. There’s also a chance of light winds early, or in the evening. Middleton should be around 3 – 4′ and semi-clean, with lumpy 2′ waves on the Mid Coast.

Early next week a new WSW swell should push in, and at the moment it looks like arriving with light ESE winds. More on that in a few days…
