SA surf outlook Dec 29

The penultimate forecast of the silly season played out pretty much as expected, and a fun WSW swell toward the end of the week delivered waves to Yorkes and even the fickle Mid Coast of Friday. Crowds were pretty mental by Adelaide standards on the Mid with zero options on the South Coast, but by Gold Coast standards 85 heads out at Seaford was a quiet day.

Tonight ( Sunday ) there are small lines and light winds on the Mid Coast, and near flat conditions down South.  A new WSW swell will roll in with a cool change ( and possible thunderstorm… whoohoo! ) later tomorrow.

Winds will be up from the North early on Monday morning, possibly around 20 knots from dawn onward. The Mid Coast will be chopped up by the wind but may have some waist high waves, but down South will remain tiny – in the 1′ range at Middleton and probably blown out.  The wind will go NW then swing W-SW sometime mid – late arvo,  possibly gusting 27 knots before easing and tending SSW by evening. The Mid Coast should be up to 2′ later in the day, but wind effected.

Tuesday will be much cooler off the back of the front, and winds will be SW at 17 knots in the morning. The Mid Coast will be choppy and around 2′, Middleton should build to 2 – 3′ but it will also be bumpy with onshore winds.

The first day of 2020 will open to very light winds, NE under 5 knots at first then shifting light West then SW-S at 10  -12 knots by late arvo. The Mid Coast should be clean early on Wednesday with surf around 1 -2′, and there’s also a chance of glassy surf on the South Coast for the dawny, The swell should hold overnight, and hopefully deliver 2 – 3′ waves to the Middleton – Day St. stretch. West facing breaks over at Yorkes look very good mid-week.

A more Easterly airstream will dominate conditions on Thursday, with a few clean 1 – 2′ waves on the Mid Coast and clean 2′ waves at Middleton early The breeze will tend more SE after lunch but should remain under 10 knots all day.

On Friday winds will be light from the NE early, but will soon increase to 20  -25 knots from the North. Leftover 1 – 2′ waves on the Mid Coast will become bumpy pretty fast, and stay that way for the rest of the day.  Middleton will have surf around 1 – 2′, but it will probably be blown out by 9am. It’s looking HOT too.

Another front looks like rolling in overnight, and Saturday will probably kick off with onshore SW winds and cooler weather. The Mid Coast will be bumpy 1 – 2′, and Middleton will probably be in the 2′ range. Looking into Sunday, the wind may go back to the SE overnight and clean it up on the Mid Coast the following morning. The sou-easters will create lumpy conditions on the South Coast.

A new Southerly swell may lift the South Coast over 2′ on Monday, but let’s see how that pans out in a week.
