SA surf outlook Feb 3

It’s been a bit of a crazy few days in terms of weather, with flash flooding over the weekend following another run of nerve-wracking hot weather at the height of the bushfire season. In the mids of the madness, the South Coast had an almost unknown six-day run of summer waves, including one in the six foot range. Yorkes scored over the Austalia Day weekend, and even the Mid Coast managed something surfable every day of the holiday. We’re now back into a troppo pattern, so we might see rain on a few days this week.

There’s a decent SSW swell hitting the South Coast this evening, and you’ll find surf in the 4′ range at Middleton early. Expect a few lumps from 15 knot SSE winds overnight, but it’ll be sort-of glassy early on Tuesday with very light East winds. There are definitely a few spots worth checking, but I’ll leave that up to your imagination :D. The Mid Coast will have a few leftover 1′ waves and clean conditions, West facing breaks over at Yorkes will be clean and fun with waves in the 2 – 4′ range between Pondie and Berry Bay.

The Easterly airstream will continue on Wednesday, but the Mid Coast will fade as the swell tends more SW, with clean waves only around  0.5′. It’ll be around 2 – 3′ at Middleton and a bit lumpy with 10 knot East winds. More exposed west- facing breaks over at Yorks should still have a few fun waves, just a bit smaller than Tuesday.

A new SSW swell will build overnight, and Thursday will be solid on the South Coast. By late morning 5 – 6′ sets are possible at exposed breaks, although it’ll be a bit wobbly with 10 knot East winds. Once again, a few lesser-known spots will be worth a look, especially west of Victor. The Mid Coast will be clean but waves will only be around 1′, Yorkes will have plenty of swell at selected spots – you’ll probably have to do a bit of driving on the day to pick somewhere.

Winds will be light from the SE early on Friday, the Mid Coast will be clean but surf will only be around 0.5′ again. The swell will be easing on the South Coast, 3 – 4′ at Middelton early but dropping by a foot or so after lunch. The wind will add lumps, and pick up to 15 knots from the SE-S by mid arvo.

The weekend will kick off with light ESE winds on Saturday, and small surf around half a foot on the Mid Coast.  The swell will be smaller and lumpy down South, maybe around 1 – 2′ at Middleton. Sunday looks lumpy/glassy on the South Coast, with surf only around 1′. The Mid Coast will be flat, and west-facing breaks over at Yorkes won’t be great either, despite clean/glassy conditions in the morning.

A new WSW swell is lining up for early next week… more on that in a few day’s time.
