SA surf outlook Sep 9

Welcome to September in Southoz, the month of the Royal Show, fiercely unpredictable weather, and surprisingly often, reasonable surf.

The first month of spring has been pretty good with a long period of light winds and a good combo of swells over the last week. Yorkes was the place to be but there were a couple of good days on the South Coast when the swell wasn’t too small. The fickle Mid Coast had the best day in months on Wednesday last week and followed up on Thursday with fun conditions before the wind arrived.

We’re in for another week of very typical early Spring weather with several days of light winds courtesy of a couple of large High pressure systems. There’s also a couple of swells lining up, and since now only about 23 people read this I’ll tell you when it’ll be good.

The wind will have a bit of East in it early Tuesday, west facing breaks at Yorkes look really good and even the Mid Coast should score a few 1 – 2′ waves. Middleton will be a bit lumpy at around 3 – 4′, but it’ll clean up with very light Northerlies throughout the afternoon.

On Wednesday the South Coast will have offshore winds tending light NE early, then NNW at 10 – 15 knots after lunch. Surf will be in the 2 – 3′ range at Middleton but looks like it may build a bit after lunch. In any case, it’ll be smooth and well lined up all day. The Mid Coast should still manage a few 1 – 2′ waves in the morning on the incoming tide. Wind and swell will favour south-facing breaks over at Yorkes, but you’ll probably still score the likes of Pondie and you favourite breaks between Gym and Berry bay early in the morning.

The wind will kick around more to the West on Thursday, kind of cross-offshore early on the South Coast with semi-clean waves around 4′ at Middleton early in the day. The Mid Coast will be onshore and a bit bumpy at around 2′, west facing breaks over at Yorkes will be bigger and also wind effected.

A NW wind at 5 knots will be good on the South Coast early Friday, despite a less than perfectly aimed swell. Surf looks like it’ll ease to around 2′ at Middleton. The Mid Coast will be bumpy, and back to around 1′. There’s a slim chance of an hour of glassy conditions pre-dawn.

Very light NE winds should return overnight and Saturday should be glassy over the Fleurieu and Yorke peninsulas early.  the Mid Coast will only be around 1′, but it’ll build after lunch as a new WSW swell fills in. Middleton will probably only be around 1 – 2′ with a bit too much west in the swell.

Sunday looks a bit bigger on the South Coast and clean with offshore N-NW winds at 15 knots, possibly stronger from mid-morning onwards. Surf should be in the 2 – 3′ range at Middleton from morning smoko onward, the Mid Coast will be around 2′ but most likely wind effected.

There’s a new WSW swell lining up for early next week, More on that in the next forecast.
